چکیده
introduction this study was conducted to evaluate the involvement of body organs such as the lungs in systemic lupus erythematosus (sle). little information exists on lung involvement in lupus patients without respiratory symptoms; we aimed to evaluate the characteristics of lung gas transfer in female sle patients using carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (dlco) in comparison with a control group. methods dlco and lung volume parameters were prospectively measured and analyzed in 76 sequential sle patients with active disease in our rheumatology department in 2005. results the measured transfer factor was lower in female patients with lupus than in the control group (p≤0.001). a similar reduction was observed in volume-corrected transfer factor with stronger statistical significance (p≤0.001). residual volume and total lung capacity were greater in patients than in the control group (p≤0.001). conclusions reduction of lung transfer factor is a frequent observation in patients with sle who had no clinical respiratory symptoms. this finding is in favor of alveolocapillary membrane involvement in patients with lupus. increased residual volume and total lung capacity may be due to subclinical bronchiolitis. keywords systemic lupus erythematosus, total lung capacity, lung transfer factor.

To determine the prevalence of pulmonary dysfunction in lupus erythematosus, 24 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 5 patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) were studied. Diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide was abnormal in 17 (71 percent) SLE patients. A restrictive ventilatory defect was present in 6 (25 percent) and arterial hypoxemia in 4 of 23 (17 percent). The ...

متن کاملSerial pulmonary function testing in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Previous studies have documented the pulmonary function abnormalities associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There are very few data, however, regarding the progression of such changes. To study this question, we evaluated the pulmonary function of a group of 25 patients with SLE from two to seven years after a set of pulmonary function tests had been performed as part of their ove...
متن کاملPulmonary function in children with systemic lupus erythematosus.
BACKGROUND Abnormalities of pulmonary function have been found in children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) even in the absence of clinical or radiographic evidence of pulmonary involvement. It is unknown whether these abnormalities represent an early sign of progressive lung disease or whether they are associated with disease activity. METHODS After a mean of 4.5 years, respiratory fu...
